Once more with a very substantial proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the varietal mix, Château Mouton Rothschild 2008 offers a rich array of aromas and flavours throughout the tasting.On the nose, red fruit, blackberry and blackcurrant combine agreeably with floral notes, especially violet.On airing, roasted, toasted notes mingle harmoniously with the oak of new barrels.On the palate, the wine displays a lively, powerful, solidly built attack and releases silky, creamy tannins.In their refinement, the flavours reveal remarkable fruit and balance.In 2008, nature took its time before providing the necessary ingredients, from vine to vinification, for a very fine wine indeed.Technically demanding, the 2008 vintage reconciles refinement and power, giving Château Mouton Rothschild promising ageing potential. 2008 will be one of the best vintages of this early century;
83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot.] Fine purple-red, fine aromatic elegance, blackcurrants present, but subdued and a lovely satiny texture takes over with almost creamy tannins, a finely-grained wine almost understated now but with internal power and length that will continue to develop in barrel to show the lush fruit that is typical of Mouton.
Showing a dark and intense color with a fruity and ripe nose that offers an aromatic character yet this fruit is slightly less vibrant than I was expecting. Soft on entry, this wine performs almost suave, and then developing both structured as well as compacted on the mid-palate. This Mouton does not reveal itself untied at this time. It finishes aromatic and fat over fine tannins and a good sappy length. It does not show as usual. Is this because of the delay in barrel ageing? At the same time last year and in the context of that vintage, the 2007 Mouton had impressed me much more. I will taste again this 2008 during the month of May.
En primeur barrel sample. The ’08 Mouton is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot (a substantially higher proportion of the former.) The nose is already quite complex: blackberry, oyster shell, briary, a touch of seaweed. Good definition, quite a mercurial nose, the oak well integrated. The palate is superb: great fruit intensity, this is an ebullient Mouton Rothschild with a real sense of energy and tautness. Superb balance, great poise, blackberry, boysenberry and a wonderful sense of mineralite towards the assertive finish. A certain sense of femininity about this Mouton. Regal! Tasted April 2009.
The final blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot exhibits tell-tale black currant liqueur, incense, charcoal and floral-like characteristics. The oak is pushed to the background, one of the major improvements director Philippe Dalhuin has made at this estate. Full-bodied, deep and impressively endowed, it is a deep, rich, less massive effort than either the 2010 or 2009.
Château Mouton Rothschild, owned by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and her children, is regarded as one of the world’s greatest wines. The story of Mouton Rothschild is that of a magical combination of soil, climate and devotion of one man, Baron Philippe de Rothschild (1902-1988), Baroness Philippine’s father. In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, from the English branch of the family, bought Château Brane-Mouton and immediately renamed it in Mouton Rothschild. Baron Philippe de Rothschild, when he took over the estate in 1922, decided to devote his life to it and to make Mouton unique, producing the very best wine. In 1924, he was the first to introduce entire chateau bottling. In 1926, he built the majestic 100-metre barrel hall. In 1945, to celebrate the liberation of France, he had the idea of crowning the label of that year’s vintage with a V for Victory. Since then, a different label is created for each vintage by famous painters. In 1962, he opened the Museum of Wine in Art. In 1973, he obtained the revision of the 1855 classification so that Mouton would be officially recognized as a First Growth.
